Hindeloopen Folk Art

Hindeloopen is famous because of its special style of painted furniture. This art, which was (and still is) practised by artisans, is colorfull and decorated with floral ornaments, biblical scenes and sea imagery.

The art came into being around 1650 and was very popular in the Hindeloopen sea-captain's houses. This style of painting derives from late Renaissance and early Baroque. This can be seen from the use of imitation marble, acanthus plants and scenes from Greek mythology. The main background colours are red, blue, white and green.

The old Hindeloopen painting tradition is continued by the Glashouwer family. They produce handmade products for a wide circle of people who appreciate the art. The page Hindeloopen Art gives you an impression of their collection.
